Brief Write of a Brief Flight – Secret of the Magic Crystals

I’m not really sure how or why this game got produced. It’s awful; really awful. Artery Studios, a graphical-based studio who have worked on Driver, Witcher 2 and Need for Speed have really pulled out all the stops on this one. And by stops I mean the ones that have been pulled straight from Pegasus’ arse. Users reviews on Metacritic disagree with this assessment as it currently holds an 8.2 out of 10 with most reviews saying it was the greatest game they’ve ever played. This should give you an indicator of just how bad the game is when people go out of their way to give a ridiculous review.

In Secret of the Magic Crystals, you play a horse trainer/breeder/stable-hand who utilises magic crystals to turn your regular horses into magical horses. You can groom it and craft shoes and train the horse using the same repeatable mini-game which is a lobotomised version of Dance Dance Revolution. You can also race your horses and send them on quests which are just timer-based. The graphics are inconsistent as they range between cartoon and iPad-worthy.

I assume through playing the game and completing quests, you can obtain the other types of horses such as the fiery steeds. But I just didn’t care since I’ve played Facebook games (games built around waiting hours for things to complete) that were more engaging than this. I would only ever recommend playing this game if you were curious to have a good example of a bad game. And I would never, under any circumstances, recommend paying money for it.

Secret of the Magic Crystals is available on Steam for $4.99, the Mac App Store for $5.49.
