Kickstarter: Project Phoenix

I never thought there would come a day when I would willingly, without a sword being held to my throat, back a JRPG Kickstarter. This isn’t to say that I don’t like or enjoy JRPGs. Often the battle mechanics can be a little boring and odd, the characters arch-typical and one dimensional, annoying and nonsensical loot systems, have terrible and outdated graphics, and the games do weird things like start you off at level 17 and a half. Despite all this, there are some JRPGs which have been some of my favourite games to play over the years such as the Pokémon series, Golden Sun, Final Fantasy Tactics, Chrono Trigger and the Secret of Mana.

Hopefully, I’ll be able to add Project Phoenix to that list with the developers (many of them involved the games I just listed) stating that they’re making efforts to implement modern graphics, an ever-present and involved world, a new battle system that involves elements of squad-based RTS and “Art that balances Western functionality with Japanese aesthetics!”

I’m looking forward to seeing the final result of this kickstarter.

Project Phoenix  launched on Kickstarter on 12 August, 2013 with a goal of $100,000 and will be finished on 11 September, 2013. It currently has 11,912 backers and a total funding of $718,807.
